Orchids at the New York Botanical Gardens – 2011

I go every year to the orchid show and find beauty in the sinuous forms and exploding colors of this magical flower. Its well worth a morning visit for this magical exhibit.

This series show with Nikon D7000 and Nikon 105mm f2.8 VR Macro Lens.

New York City Village Halloween Parade (Part 2)

NYC Village Halloween Parade 2011

NYC Village Halloween Parade 2011

As I said in Part 1 of this post, the Village Halloween Parade 2012 got cancelled because of Hurricane Sandy’s assault on New York City and its vicinity. The economic damage and resource drain on the city forced the authorities to cancel the event. Hoping to attend it next year!

The best place to photograph the parade for me turned out to be the end of the line! The place where all the paraders and wanna-be psychos are let out at the end of the parade. Many are going nuts with the excitement of showing off their creativity and their personas to thousands, perhaps millions of people if you count the TV and press coverage. You should have a good, powerful flash with fully charged batteries as well. A fast DSLR like my  Nikon D7000 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR with a fast lens like a Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Wide Angle Zoom Lens coupled with the Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight  should do the trick.

I kept my aperture at f2.8 to get shallow DOF and a fast shutter speed. ISO 800 was great to have too. Keep the flash under control and you can get some great shots. Some of my pictures are overblown because I didn’t dial my flash down. Well, next time!

Follow the paraders after the parade and the party moves on to Union Square where all the paraders and even more street performers party on.

All in all, its a great event and a true New York tradition.

New York City Village Halloween Parade (Part 1)

NYC Village Halloween Parade 2011

NYC Village Halloween Parade 2011

Due to hurricane Sandy in NYC, the 39th Village Halloween Parade, organized with love and dedication by the good folks at Village Halloween Parade was first postponed, then canceled for 2012. It one of those authentic New York events where you can see originality and artistry in the costumes created by local and international artists, costumers and in some cases, sponsored floats.

The parade usually starts in the West Village and end in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. I have been going to the parade for a while and last year was the most fun because I was prepared with my camera and a powerful flash needed to properly light the paraders as they race past the spectators. I took too many pictures as usual and selecting just a few is not an option, so I am going to publish the pictures in 2 or 3 separate posts so as not to inundate my viewers with a giant picture archive.

I will also point out how to take better pictures at the Village Halloween Parade and some secret best spots to get fantastic pictures.

Please spread the word and share with your friends and family using the sharing buttons at the bottom.

All photos were shot with my trusty Nikon D7000 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR  with a Nikon SB-900 AF Speedlight Flash  on top. The camera performs very well under all weather and lighting conditions. The focus needs a little patience and you have to hold this camera steady to get the sharpest and best exposed results. Remember to shoot RAW and get the best shot.
